What is Kundalini or Kundalini Yoga
First, let us look at the term Kundalini, what is and how does it help, Kundalini in Sanskrit means “coiled one or ringlets” the divine energy that sits at the base of the spine or the first chakra Muladhara some would say from our endocrine system. This energy is like a serpent coiled in a circular motion and when activated can give you spiritual awakening or enlightenment. I’m not going to get into the history of Kundalini but rather just understand its an energy like a serpent which can be activated through meditation.
So Why activate it?
Whenever we are dealing with emotions and dealing with anxiety or depression there is a sense of either worry, sadness and guilt and sometimes all three. I have definitely felt this way before. I used to feel anxious about the unknown and sometimes think about all the notions that came with these thoughts, building up negative blockages in my mind and body which would cause my anxiety or make it even worse. Kundalini activation is not only for meditation, but most gurus would also say its to create spiritual wisdom and this is true enlightenment, throughout this process we can start to create the patterns to self-heal.
You see when your mind is in the void it sometimes fills itself with negativity and Kundalini meditation practice offers ways to remove not only the negative thoughts but brings patterns of gratitude, self-love and joy, ending up changing your patterns and habits which provide mental stability.
Here are 4 kundalini meditation techniques for Meditation
1. Realign your spine (improve spinal flexibility)
Re-align your spine by getting comfortable to be sitting for approximately 15mins or longer -this is an intimate time for your body, mind and spirit, so know you may be here as long as you like, but at the same time, you want to be relaxed. You want to remove the sensation of limbs feeling sore with any steady movement it’s always good to stretch out the body and put it in back in alignment.
You can find more than one spinal flexibility exercise the goal is to get the body ready for a seated position and you will need good posture.
sitting in a chair or on the floor do Neck rolls (safely)
downward dog for 8 breaths pressing into heals alternating back and forth
Sit on your heels and as you inhale flex forward as you exhale flex backwards do this back and forth for 2 mins
Sitting in a crossed leg position twist the body side to side ensure to safely do this by putting your hands on your knees
2. Focus on the Breath- (Energize the breath)
You may have heard that meditation is all focused on the breath, well, its all about channelling the divine spirit within and our breath allows simplifies this for us. There is a huge focus with getting your mind and body and spirit at the center point and breathing correctly can provide great benefits for reducing nervousness and anxiety.
Steps to follow
Sit in a crossed leg position or on a cushion with your legs crossed and put your palms together close to your chest
Take a 4 deep breath and exhale slowly for 4 Mississippi seconds, if you can slow the exhale the better (do what’s comfortable for you)
After taking deep breaths, keep a steady state breath but close your eyes and start to clear your thoughts
Visualize a third eye in between your eyebrows, if you want to use the color blue or white you may do so
Be humble with your breath and pay attention to how it sounds and feels
Stay here for at least 2 mins
3. Focus on a mantra (raise your vibrations)
Now find a mantra that resonates with you and chants this mantra for 2 mins its okay to switch mantras if you want to with you. Here are some of the most common.
Om or Aum is the most basic and powerful mantra you can chant. This universal mantra will create powerful, positive vibrations in your lower abdomen.
Lokah samastah sukhino bhavantu is a mantra of cooperation and compassion and means “May all beings everywhere be happy and free, and may the thoughts, words, and actions of my own life contribute in some way to that happiness and to that freedom for all.” Repeat this mantra three or more times.
If you prefer as well you can simply just say a mantra in English to say such as an affirmation. I am with the divine power, I am that I am, I am of this universe and this universe is one with me.

Be mindful of the longer you can chant this mantra the longer your meditation could be giving you more healing and self-love. I do my best to do this for at least 2 mins but sometimes I also feel like putting on some audio chants and chant along or I will hum along. You can find some songs from this youtube site.
I’m not an expert on mantras but I think its good to understand that the concept is to amplify the tunes of the body into a different state and frequencies this will help elevate and raise the kundalini spirit within us.
3. Give thanks to thyself and Universe.
Mudra: Press your hands together at the centre of your chest in prayer pose. Press the joints of the thumbs into the sternum.
Give thanks to yourself to for finding the time and place to relax and awaken your kundalini, give thanks to the divine power within you for arising up the spine finding its way to pierce through the chakras and making its way through the 1000 petal lotus and infinite wisdom.
Repeat daily and if possible both day and night.
Kundalini awakening is a unique experience for every individual. The idea that this creative energy force can be rooted and ignited to eternal wisdom is a great way to live a more humble and gracious life.
Part of the anxiety I used to feel is disvalued, I felt helpless or in some sense not worthy of getting the blessing of life. The best way I can describe awakening the Kundalini, is like awakening the child within us, that free-spirited rich being of just being happy to be existing and finding the curiosity of life. You see as we get older and older we start to put more layers on and start to label ourselves until we remove the spirit free person which we came into this world with. Awakening the spirit within us will awake a truly long lasting life of self-love and fulfilment.
